David Hogg, co-founder of a youth gun prohibition movement following the 2018 mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, has been elected one of three vice chairs of the Democratic National Committee, solidifying the widely held opinion Democrats want to abolish the Second Amendment and prohibit private gun ownership.
Hogg, 24, announced weeks ago he wanted to run for a vice chairmanship. The report of his victory by the New York Post brought blistering comments from readers. One man wrote, “David ‘Attention’ Hogg.” Another chimed in, “He should start by getting ALL Democrats to turn over all firearms. This would cut gun violence by 95%.” A third critic wrote, “He’s a leftist opportunist. Don’t let a crisis go to waste, when you can help yourself to a windfall on the backs of real victims.”
Hogg became a media darling following the Feb. 14, 2018 attack at the high school in Parkland, Fla. According to an account at Wikipedia, Hogg was hustled along with other students into a closet, and he managed to make a recording of the event—from his perspective—with a cell phone. As a result of his sudden fame, critics consider him a self-promoter and some even argue he was not on campus at the time of the shooting.
Wikipedia notes in its biography of Hogg that on Feb. 26, 2023, he posted a message on Twitter declaring “that the individual ‘has no right to a gun’, but rather the Second Amendment is ‘about a states right to have what is today the national guard. The modern interpretation of 2A is a ridiculous fraud pushed for decades by the gun lobby.’”
Evidently, Hogg’s education at Harvard did not include a law course which explained the three U.S. Supreme Court rulings on the Second Amendment: Heller (2008), McDonald (2010) and Bruen (2022), all of which held the amendment protects an individual right “of the people” to keep and bear arms.
Jim Geraghty, senior political correspondent at National Review, wrote Sunday, “David Hogg is likely to keep doing what he does best, insisting that the Second Amendment does not protect an individual’s right to own a firearm, arguing that the National Rifle Association is a terrorist organization, and making ill-informed and hard-left controversial statements on social media.”
But what does Hogg’s election as one of its three vice chairs—the other two, according to the NY Post, are State Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta of Pennsylvania and Artie Blanco of Nevada—say about the DNC’s future direction? It trends hard left, and the party will continue to earn its reputation as the “party of gun prohibition/confiscation.”
Democrats have pushed increasingly restrictive gun control legislation at the federal and state level for several years. The elevation of Hogg, identified by Shore News as an “anti-gun social media influencer,” casts the party’s reputation in concrete.
Portrayed by media as a “survivor” of the Parkland high school shooting, Hogg has capitalized on that description to keep himself in the public eye, and the establishment media has helped in that endeavor.
In summer of 2023, Hogg founded Leaders We Deserve PAC to “help young, progressive candidates around the country get elected to state legislatures and the U.S. Congress,” according to Wikipedia.
His candidacy for the vice chairmanship was endorsed by former vice presidential candidate Gov. Tim Walz, who declared on social media, “David Hogg represents exactly the kind of bold, dynamic, and courageous leadership our party needs right now. He has a unique ability to connect with the American people and to speak to the strengths of our party. I couldn’t be happier to support him for DNC Vice Chair.”
But the Daily Wire notes how Hogg has a habit of making “outlandish statements.” Daily Wire readers are just as unforgiving as those at the NY Post. One person wrote, “Boy this guy sure capitalized on the killings of his classmates.” Another observed, “his elevation to Vice-Chair at the DNC just proves the Dems still are going in the exact opposite direction they need to go. They still are out of touch with the people. And I encourage them to keep on the direction they’re heading. It’ll insure the GOP is dominant for at least a decade.”
If that prediction turns out to be true, Republicans should celebrating right now. The next few months should tell whether Hogg will live down to expectations.
