The Democratic National Committee has elected high-profile anti-gunner David Hogg, the 24-year-old who was co-founder of the March For Our Lives gun prohibition student movement and a media darling, as a vice chairman.
Hogg’s election removes any doubt about the future direction of the party, which has come to be known in recent years as the “party of gun prohibition.”
Hogg was a student at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla. at the time of the Feb. 14, 2018 mass shooting. He was catapulted to instant fame for having recorded a video during the incident, which claimed 17 lives, and afterward for playing a huge role in creating a national high school student movement for gun control, an effort quickly embraced and commandeered by Everytown for Gun Safety.
Writing at the National Review, veteran journalist Jim Geraghty observed, “David Hogg is likely to keep doing what he does best, insisting that the Second Amendment does not protect an individual’s right to own a firearm, arguing that the National Rifle Association is a terrorist organization, and making ill-informed and hard-left controversial statements on social media.”
According to Yahoo News, “The same year Hogg graduated from Harvard, in 2023, he co-founded and became president of Leaders We Deserve, an organization that recruits and trains progressive Gen Z candidates running for state and federal offices.”
Hogg won election over the weekend, having announced weeks ago his intention to run for the vice chairmanship. Straight Arrow News is reporting that Hogg “called for an aggressive approach to Republican opposition and gun control reform in his victory speech.”
“Let’s go win our young people back, and let’s stop sending just our thoughts and prayers to address gun violence and do something,” he reportedly declared during his speech.
According to the New York Post, conservatives and gun rights observers are viewing Hoggs ascendency with sarcasm. The newspaper quotes Andrew Pollack, whose daughter was killed at the Parkland massacre—and who was a major backer of Donald Trump—stating, “David is the greatest gun salesman of all-time and I think he will do an even better job pushing young men further to the right.”
